WHAT IS AN HFSS PRODUCT?

The Department of Health has developed a Nutrient Profiling Model (NPM), based on ‘back of pack’ nutritional data, to categorise food and soft drink products.

Products that score 4 or more are categorised as a High Fat, Salt and Sugar (HFSS) product.

THEN PRODUCT IS HFSS

Most current savoury snacks, carbonated soft drinks, cereals and confectionery are currently HFSS.

WHAT ARE THE NEW REGULATIONS ON HFSS?

The Government is introducing restrictions on how and where HFSS products can be promoted and located.  The intention of The Food (Promotion and Placement) (England) Regulations 2021 is to:

a) reduce the availability of HFSS products bought through ‘volume promotions’ like ‘buy one get one free’ offers.

b) to restrict the placement of HFSS product categories in high footfall areas of an affected store, like checkouts, end-of-aisle units, store entrances and designated queueing areas.

The restrictions do not apply to B2B activities or to stores in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

These restrictions come into force on 1st October 2022.
